It was the best of times.

There are two major milestones I yearn for once that baby comes into my arms.
Sleeping through the night and smiling.
The baby, that is.
Rejoicingly, we have finally achieved both!
Can I get an AMEN!?

At first I thought it was the jammies.  Ever since Sam was four weeks old (he's six weeks now), and we'd put him in a certain pair of white, ducky jammies, he'd sleep through the night.  The first night it happened I woke up--extremely rested, mind you--thinking, He must be dead.  I became superstitious.  I'd wash the jammies JUST so he could wear them night after night after night.  Ben would laugh at me as I'd warn him, "Hey, buddy, don't knock it . . . ."  However, the past week he's worn a variety of cozy little jammies and the result is the same.  Have we conquered sleepless nights?  I am so hopeful.  Some people love those nighttimes with their babies.  As much as I love my babies, I am NOT one of those people.

Halloween night Sam smiled!  First, a smallish grin.  Then slowly, working this out for the first time, his mouth opened wide in a big, mouthy grin.  I'd been waiting for this, my most favorite of moments.  With his mouth still open and smiley eyes aglow, I wondered if he was trying to kiss me?  This was probably all in my head, but, oh well, let me fool myself into believing it because I can't remember when babies start kissing for real (and the fact that I really, really wanted to believe that he WAS trying to kiss me).  I kissed him and kissed him and the smiles kept coming.  Such a great moment.

He's not smiling all the time.  It usually happens after he eats and we have a good chunk of awake time.  But that's okay, it's onward and upward from here.

Now, if I could just remember when they start laughing . . . .

what?! Sleeping through the night?! You are SO lucky!!!
My babies are over a year when they sleep through the night. It's bad.

He is so so so cute! I love that little baby of yours even though I've never met him! I want to squish and hold him!

He is absolutely darling and I'm really impressed he's sleeping through the night. My babes didn't until about a year when they'd stopped nursing.

I love those baby smiles! Cutie pie, Sam.

Eliza just started to learn how to laugh and she's 2 1/2 months. She doesn't do it all the time, but it has happened. :) So good that he sleeps through the night. Eliza will sometimes if we time everything right. Isn't it so funny that we go check on them if they sleep a long time. We are totally like that. Your babe is so cute too... love all that hair!

Oh - and I have to tell you that I still laugh about your child asking if the baby was a spy for Jesus. I told our whole family at a sunday dinner and we all got a good chuckle. It's about the best comment ever by a kid.
